Identities are too easy
And we can do better

A tree might be called a “tree” but it’s so much more. It’s also part of our respiratory system, an ecosystem, a habitat, and a resource. The longer you look into it, the more you realize how small the name “tree” is for such a marvelously complex thing.
And that is what’s beyond identity, beyond names; the marvelous complexity in everything that is harder to sum up so easily, that requires connection and a little bit of explanation.
In a recent article by the Advocate, Mike Huckabee says, “We are creating this illusion that there is no gender, there is no identity.” Mike wants things to be easy and concise, so much so that he is willing to deprive other people their rights. But they’re not. Sexuality, gender, relationship, love are probably the most marvelously complex things there are.
The convenience of identity isn’t worth the wars they cause.
